" A Chair Once Known "

" A Chair Once Known "

- N.J.Mund

10 X 14 digital image taken of a portrait drawn in pencil on an envelope - cradled by an easel & placed on a timeless high-chair, is the actual baby-chair once used and occupied by the artists children. The sketched portrait 2018, is the artists daughter, from an original photograph taken in 2004.

The artists fascination with using chairs as subject.

There is something fascinating about a chair. That symbolic throne that shapes and influences the environment. Whether hidden in a room or left to fend outdoors a chairs essence will make you stop and think. I've been photographing chairs in the last few years and have found that the "seat for one" makes for a great subject in my conceptual art pieces and photography. There's an obvious portrayal and sometimes hidden paradox; that as an artist, am trying to discover what that entails in a scene with imagery. The chair itself and as subject, figuratively takes on a mysterious presence and persona of its own. How natural in behavior it is to sit in the same usual spot day after day giving security, comfort or a possible purpose and idea.

The photograph of the sketched portrait “ A Chair Once Known “ was drawn on a whim in 2018 from a photo taken in 2004. This brought back many sweet memories from a simpler time of my daughter from when she was a toddler. That is where I began to explore how would it look or feel to actually place the sketched drawing in the very chair she once occupied. It’s like taking a trip in a time machine and reviving the past yet innovating something new. For me, it’s an intriguing & beholding treasure in what this image really means.
